Discover our high five to Germany
By TripfixThe powerhouse of Europe with thousands of year of history, amazing cities, and some incredible landscapes – there’s so much more to Germany than beer and sausages (though there’s nothing wrong with that either).
Hold on to your stein as we take a stroll through the best that Germany has to offer…
OUR FAVOURITE 5 EXPERIENCES IN GERMANY.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
There’s a chill in the air, towns are hanging up the decorations (it’s October guys, come on!) and the faux-German Christmas markets will soon arrive to fill the air with the smell of sausages.
Experience the real thing and head to Nuremburg market, thought by many to be the prettiest market in Germany, or perhaps to Dresden which claims to have the oldest Christmas market in the country. With over 180 events to choose from nationwide you’re guaranteed to find a little slice of Christmas heaven to warm your insides like a good glass of mulled wine.
BERLIN
To walk through Berlin is to be surrounded by history in one of the most modern cities in the world. Sights such as the ruins of the Berlin Wall (now covered with some fantastic graffiti), the tiny museum at Checkpoint Charlie, the harrowing holocaust museum hidden under a striking memorial and the Brandenburg Gate should not be missed.
To get a real sense of the city though, stay a little longer, wander and discover hidden bars, pop up galleries and the incredible diversity which makes Berlin one of the coolest cities in Europe.
RUGEN ISLAND
When you think of Germany beach holidays are unlikely to be the first thing that springs to mind. Well Rugen Island has 60 km of sandy beach, towering chalk cliffs and beautiful bike trails to blow that presumption right out of the beautiful blue water.
You might want to brush up on you eins, vei, drei, first though – the vast majority of tourists here are German and you won’t find much English on the menus… on second thoughts, learn the words for sausage and beer and you’ll probably be fine.
NEUSCHWANSTEIN
In terms of massive Disney-style castles it doesn’t get much better than this. Neuschwanstein was the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty castle and attracts more than a million visitors a year. Stick to the off season and you’ll avoid the crowds and get the chance to see the towering ramparts covered with sparkling snow.
BAVARIA
Bavaria is the size of a small country and has a bigger population than Greece or Portugal. However, with the best beer in a country famous for great beer (and home to the mighty Oktoberfest), brilliant skiing opportunities, the gorgeous city of Munich, castles galore and more beautiful scenery than you can shake a very big stick at, the home of yodelling and lederhosen deserves a place on the list for sure.
